Mindset determines everything - interview outcomes included

Updated: May 29, 2021

Mindset is a very powerful tool that can determine a person's ability to embrace change and achieve lasting success. Studies have shown that mindset and positive behaviours that move us towards our goals, helps us to achieve the success we want.

In our experience of coaching clients in the area of interview skills, we come across clients who are under the impression that the way to do well is all about content. Content is important, but all the content you prepare will be swept away very quickly if you start with a negative mindset. Despite your best efforts and intentions, the subconscious mind will very quickly overwhelm someone who has a negative mindset and the interview may start to feel too challenging. Very often, this results in a negative cycle. In the world of job interviews, what happens is that the client carries the negativity into their first job interview and if the interview goes south, it then reinforces the negativity, resulting in a cycle.

There are various types of negative mindsets - the most common ones we see among clients include pessimism, fixed mindset, narcissism. All of us have some degree of these negative mindsets. Different times and different scenarios will push us into displaying these negative behaviours but what makes successful people different, is how they manage these thoughts - firstly by being able to recognise the negative emotions, and then by learning how to manage or change them.

Mindset is incredibly powerful, and can change the outcome of impending challenges - interviews included.
